Art-making Process

Material

I start with Chinese Xuan (Rice) paper, which has been used since ancient times for both writing and painting. In its various forms and textures (raw/ripe), it allows me a starting point for never ending experimentation.

Color

I then color the paper with Chinese paint and ink, which is made from minerals and plant ingredients. Using mark making techniques I manipulate the paper until I find my desired texture and fiber movement.

Collage

Using traditional mounting (scroll) paste I begin my composition - looking for that balance that brings what I see in my mind to a physical form. (Repeat)

Drawing

Adding additional depth with paint and pen to enhance the arrangement I pull in paper details while connecting unique elements to the overall form. (Repeat)

Fixative

I then spray the work and paint the edges with acrylic and gel medium for that full finished look.

Finish

My final step is to add one or two layers of cold wax to further protect the surface and retain its color intensity for the life of the piece.
